Does Your Vehicle Have a Slipping Gear?

Transmission Repair in Fort Wayne, IN

The Transmission

Your vehicle's transmission enables it to move by sending power from the engine to the wheels. Speed and torque are regulated by gears inside either a manual or automatic transmission. As the names suggest, the driver controls the shifts between gears in a manual model, while the gear shift occurs with no driver effort in an automatic. Regardless of which type of transmission your automobile has, you need a reputable shop for routine maintenance and transmission repair. Since 1962, Yeoman Service Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana, has been your best place for service.

A Slipping Gear

If your car's transmission temporarily loses traction between gears, it is said to have a slipping gear or a transmission that is slipping. You'll notice a loss of power and speed even though the engine RPM increases. The problem may be observed in either a manual or automatic transmission, but the reason it occurs may differ between the two. A slipping gear is not only aggravating but also potentially dangerous, especially in a traffic situation where you're relying on your car's response when you press the accelerator. Furthermore, if the problem isn't addressed, it is likely to worsen, causing more extensive damage.

Common Causes of a Slipping Gear

Multiple issues with the transmission can lead to a slipping gear. Specific to a manual model, a worn clutch may be the cause of the issue. If the clutch plate is damaged, it can't create the friction needed to engage and disengage the transmission and engine from one another, thereby properly transferring torque to the wheels. Other culprits are unique to an automatic transmission. These include failed solenoids and a bad torque converter. The solenoids are responsible for controlling the flow of transmission fluid. The torque converter aids power transfer and gear shifts. Slipping results when there's a problem with either of these components. Broken or worn transmission bands are also problems found in cars equipped with an automatic transmission. These bands link the gears, so the latter can't work well if the former is damaged. Other issues can impact either type of unit. Whether significantly worn or broken, damaged gears can cause both difficult shifts and slippage. Another concern can be the transmission fluid. A low fluid level results in insufficient pressure. This, in turn, leads to the gears failing to engage as intended. Also, suppose the fluid is in poor condition due to being dirty, contaminated, or burned. In that case, it reduces friction where it's needed, allowing gears to slip. Regardless of the cause, seek transmission repair at Yeoman Service Center as soon as possible.
